Here&#8217;s what actually happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What we built: a live data bridge between Shopify and SAP S\/4 HANA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rausch.de\/\">Rausch GmbH<\/a> needed a fully automated connection between their <a href=\"https:\/\/what.digital\/what-is-shopify-plus\/\">Shopify Plus<\/a> store and SAP S\/4 HANA. No manual exports, no spreadsheet handoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We built a custom SAP connector handling four core jobs: orders, payment terms, tracking numbers, and inventory sync. Working alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eddyson.com\/\">Eddyson<\/a> \u2013 an external SAP integration partner \u2013 we owned the Shopify side while Eddyson bridged the gap to SAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The flow works like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shopify sends order data via webhook to our connector<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We enrich the files with missing information and deposit them on an FTP server for Eddyson to pick up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the other direction, SAP sends tracking and inventory updates to Eddyson, which forwards them to us \u2013 we enrich and push them into Shopify<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean loop, when it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>File enrichment and payment flows: where the real complexity lives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shopify&#8217;s order webhook payload doesn&#8217;t include everything SAP S\/4 HANA needs \u2013 and that gap is where most of the work happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Barcodes<\/strong>, for example, aren&#8217;t part of the order data. The connector loops through each line item, fires an additional API call using the variant ID, and fetches the barcode separately. Same logic for <strong>gift cards<\/strong>: we detect the payment gateway name, hit the transactions endpoint, and pull the gift card data before packaging the file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this is complex in isolation. But when you&#8217;re mapping fields across two systems with fundamentally different data models, it adds up fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/what.digital\/prepayment-buy-on-account-shopify\/\"><strong>Buy on account<\/strong><\/a> required its own solution entirely. SAP handles these orders with a delivery block \u2013 the order exists but doesn&#8217;t ship until payment is confirmed. That meant orders\/create and orders\/paid couldn&#8217;t follow the same flow. We built two distinct flows, each triggering different downstream logic. Getting the SAP behavior properly documented took longer than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three-party project coordination: the hidden cost of misalignment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any project involving a client, an agency, and a third-party integration partner has natural friction points. Mapping decisions took time to finalize, and some delays came from waiting on alignment between parties rather than from the technical work itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We navigated it \u2013 but it taught us something important about how these projects should be set up from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What we&#8217;d do differently on a Shopify ERP integration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We went into this project without a detailed requirements list or milestone-based roadmap. That gap cost us time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Upfront documentation is non-negotiable.<\/strong> When you&#8217;re coordinating between Shopify, a custom connector, and a third-party SAP middleware partner, ambiguity is expensive. A requirement that seems obvious to one party is news to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few things we now treat as mandatory on any <a href=\"https:\/\/what.digital\/shopify-erp-integrations\/\">Shopify ERP integration<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A detailed requirements list before kickoff<\/strong> \u2013 especially for payment flows, tax logic, and edge cases like gift cards or custom payment methods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A shared Slack channel with all parties<\/strong> onboarded from day one \u2013 context scattered across emails and calls slows everything down<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data mapping completed early and in detail<\/strong> \u2013 the gap between what Shopify sends and what SAP expects is where projects lose weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key takeaways for your Shopify SAP integration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re planning a Shopify SAP or broader Shopify ERP integration with a third-party middleware partner, here&#8217;s the short version of what this project taught us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Define requirements before kickoff<\/strong> \u2013 not a rough scope, an actual list. Payment flows, tax logic, edge cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Map your data early<\/strong> \u2013 the Shopify-to-SAP field gap is real and takes time to resolve properly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Build on a stack you&#8217;ll maintain<\/strong> \u2013 technical debt from legacy codebases surfaces as migration costs, not if but when.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One shared communication channel from day one<\/strong> \u2013 when three parties need to align quickly, async fragmentation kills momentum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connector works. The lessons were worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We also delivered the full <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/what.digital\/shops\/\"><em>Shopify services<\/em><\/a><em> scope for Rausch GmbH \u2013 building their Shopify Plus store, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/what.digital\/shopware-to-shopify-migration\/\"><em>migrating from Shopware 5<\/em><\/a><em>, and implementing a custom product configurator for their Pick&amp;Mix solutions.
